Palm Beach County Announces Choice Options

Apr 27, 2017

Finding a home in a sought-after school district can severely limit one’s options when looking for a home. Thankfully, those searching for South Florida real estate near Palm Beach County will no longer face these restrictions. The School District of Palm Beach County is rolling out a program for the 2017-2018 school year that allows for open enrollment regardless of a student’s attendance zone.

About the Program

Choice options are available to all students entering grades K-12, including those who do not live in Palm Beach County. Through this program, students are able to apply to “choice” schools, customized to their career aspirations. Teachers at these schools are specially trained to provide the highest level of academic instruction. Enrollment in these schools should ideally pave the way for these students to thrive in postsecondary education, and ultimately, in their careers. These options include:

  • Career and Technical Education (CTE)

Here, students receive instruction that will prepare them for their prospective careers. Whether the student dreams of being a software engineer, a doctor, an actor, or a chef, there is sure to be a program suited for his or her interests.
  • International Baccalaureate (IB) Programs.

These programs take place over the course of four years, allowing children to immerse themselves in a different culture while receiving an education. These programs exist all over the world.
  • Home Education.

As always, parent-directed options are available for parents looking to guide their child(ren)through their education.
  • Opportunity Scholarship Program.

Developed by the Florida Legislature in 1999, this program allows eligible students to attend a higher performing public school.

If the program the child desires is offered within his or her current school district, they can attend school “in-house.” If the program that suits their needs is outside of the previously established attendance boundary, it will be considered a “choice” program. Transportation is provided to students enlisted in choice programs, though parents must ensure the child gets to the closest designated bus stop.

On March 31, 2017, the district announced which choice programs applicants have been assigned to, giving parents the freedom to move anywhere. Now that your kids have been accepted into their respective choice programs, it’s your turn to choose: where do you want to live?
